Oxford Punch Needle
Your journey begins with the Rolls Royce of Punch Needles, designed in 1995 by Amy Oxford,
a well known rug hooker from Vermont, USA. (For more information, please read “Birth of a Punch Needle” - https:/amyoxford.com/pages/birth-of-a-punch-needle). Because of the design and functionality,
the loops created by the Oxford Punch Needle are more consistent and even than other punch needles
which makes it easier to use. Another great aspect of its design is that it is easy on your hand,
and who better to understand this and develop a tool than someone who is making rugs for a living.
HOW THE PUNCH NEEDLE ORIGINATED
Punch Needle is an American craft that began in the late 1800s when a man named Ebenezer Ross from Toledo Ohio patented the first punch needle tool, as an alternative to the traditional rug hook. He called it “The Griffin.” It was invented to speed up rug hooking. Rather than working from the front with a hook to pull loops up through a backing fabric, the punch needle tool pushes a continuous length of yarn through fabric to form loops on the underside of the fabric. Since the creation of The Griffin, there were numerous different punch needles that came onto the market in the early 1900s. One of them as the Craftsman Punch Needle, developed in 1932, which is the one Amy Oxford originally to make rugs before developing her own punch needle in 1995. You can read more about this in the link at the top of the page.
Although traditionally used for making rugs, modern applications of punch needle include cushions, wall hangings and bags. It is being experimented with all over the world and crafters are designing and developing all sorts of uses for the punch needle. It has also become a craft that is linked to mental wellbeing due to the rhythmic punching experienced. It is a tool that connects us with our inner creative spirit, grounds us in the present moment and relaxes the heart and mind.
